pages with VISIONS FOR AN ISLAND……

This page is created in order to spark a bit of debate on where Ærø will be heading in the future. Much more to come….. and yes in english since almost 10 % of people living on Ærø now are foreigners - and hopefully many more will come so that we can see the island - and its population thrive in well-being and happiness…

Meetings reg. ÆRØ-FUTU-VISIONS

-              First Inspirational talk - about Auroville, india

RØNDALGÅRD Sep. 24th 2026

ÆRØ-FUTU-VISIONS – is intended to be a series of INSPIRATIONAL & INFORMAL talks, events, meetings or whatever reg. the future of Ærø.

The first of these initiatives is an informal talk and introduction to a GLOBAL community in India called Auroville - since what is more important than community building - the intention is get inspiration for how a small island community like Ærø possibly can develop and potentially create new models for how humans can live sustainably prosperous and technologically appropriate – together….

What does the future bring for the citizens of the small island Ærø – could we imagine a  population which probably gradually could become more and more multicultural and diverse – or – is island living dying out more or less?

The population of Ærø has generally declined over the last 20 years, with a recent slight recovery to around 6,000 residents. Foreign residents make up about 7.5% of the population, primarily consisting of people from Western countries like Germany.

How can this decrease in the population of Ærø be stopped and even turned around?

Could one of the answers be supporting and enhancing / giving possibilities for MULTICULTURAL & DIVERSE COMMUNITY BUILDING?

AI will have a massive impact on how we work and live in the coming decades. Serious shifts in how humans work and live is expected and anticipated – a kind of citizen salary or basic income could be on the way not far away from what the Danish welfare system already offers.

Could Ærø benefit from this development and already now start to prepare for a hopefully new prosperous future for the island – AND could part of the solution be offering opportunities, maybe economic benefits, buildings etc. for MULTICULTURAL & DIVERSE COMMUNITY projects consisting of MULTICULTURAL & DIVERSE maybe already established communities, other “structures”, individuals who wants to share and be part of one or more COMMUNITIES?

There are numerous trends that indicate strong moves among people worldwide wanting to “live together” again – the decade of the nucleus family and individualism might be over.

One of the trends is  “Detribalization” – a relatively new phenomena and primarily among younger people who are considering themselves as “global nomads”.

Former hotels and castles, old abandoned villages, old industrial buildings etc. have all over the world been turned into new “hubs” where you live & work… where life is work and work is life – or rather work as such does not really exist anymore but is an integral part of any human beings personal development.

Another trend is “SENIOR COMMUNITIES” / SENIOR BOFÆLLESKABER. Allover Denmark these new communities are actually being build and the demands is overwhelming.

These communities varies a lot in how they are designed – and who lives there.

There is also https://www.landjord.com/ - a new organization buying up land and making nature as well as summer camp communities – and also slowly moving towards creating communities.

TINY HOUSE COMMUNITIES is another trend which is growing. These communities generally consist of  people who wants to live more minimalistic – in fx. small houses – but in a village like setting. An example could be https://www.koegefaellesjord.com outside Køge app. 30 min from Copenhagen. But also https://www.grobund.org where micro or tiny houses are both being build but also a major community is evolving just south of Ebeltoft.

BUT there are already relatively big communities – out there on the planet. And one has a serious connection to Ærø – its called AUROVILLE and is based in Southern India – interestingly enough just north of Tranquebar – a place where possibly many Ærø sailors has been years ago.

Auroville : City of dawn

A living laboratory for the Human Unity

Auroville is an international township in South India that has spent nearly six decades exploring how people from different nations can live, learn, work and regenerate the Earth together—not as a finished model, but as a courageous and imperfect experiment.

Its education seeks to develop the whole human being through freedom, creativity, self-knowledge and responsibility. Its economic experiments explore how enterprise, shared resources and meaningful work can serve both people and the planet. Its cultural life brings diverse traditions and ways of seeing into a common space, seeking unity without uniformity. Its ecological work demonstrates how damaged land can be restored through collective care, knowledge and long-term commitment.

Auroville offers a living field for collaboration among educators, artists, researchers, designers, social enterprises, institutions and young people. The opportunity is not to copy Auroville, but to learn with it—and to contribute knowledge, creativity, technology and partnership to a shared experiment for humanity.

From Auroville to the world and human unity.

It so happens to 2 Aurovillians have a very special connection to Ærø and have promised they will tell a bit about life in Auroville. This will happen for a smaller group of people mid October 2026.

A bit about Uma & Torkil from Auroville - and Ærø:

Uma Prajapati is a designer and social entrepreneur who has lived and worked in Auroville, India, since 1996. Her work brings together clothing, craft, community and ecological care.

Uma has spent 30 years exploring how design can serve people both maker and user. Through Upasana conscious clothing brand she creates conscious clothing  using knowledge of ayurveda for dyeing textile  - traditional artisanal  skills  with organic cotton. Her practice is shaped by Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo.

Torkil Danzter is from Ærø and has lived in Auroville, India, since 2011. Trained in mathematics and economics, he also makes art from wood, using mathematical ideas and traditional techniques.

Auroville’s aspiration for human unity is important to him.

Alongside his art, he has taken part in the community’s administration and the practical work of shaping life together.

We could possibly learn a lot from AUROVILLE and therefore I am going there this winter to get more inspiration, develop more contacts etc.

BUT can – and do we want TO develop A future on Ærø imagining building new and very diverse communities?  Maybe something similar to AUROVILLE – maybe not – maybe our own ÆRØ vision?? Lets have a discussion and see what comes out of it.

This site is right now just a proposal from me to start a debate on Ærø - and possibly more activities could be established in order to hopefully create the basis for MULTICULTURAL & DIVERSE COMMUNITY projects - not only on Ærø, but possibly also elsewhere.

MORE TO COME IF THERE IS AN INTEREST………
